The Tritura Group puts forth art for enlightment and critical attitude. when playing instead of academic theories.
A group of youngsters, vibrant in their prime. They got together in a medium of art group namely Tritura. As it is a necessity for these young people to place the value of idealism above all else, the Tritura kids also uphold the merit. Idealism leads the Tritura kids into being critical in confronting life’s entire phenomenon. It is then not an odd thing when the works of Tritura kids are filled with social critics, particularly as they are passing the judgment on the nation’s current condition. The uncertainty of government’s policies towards underprivileged citizens is often times the main theme to cover.
“Human can’t live without knowledge and meals. But without art the beauty of life will not last for long” a quote by Dostoevsky is so true. Art is one of the life supporting elements that is significant. It can be said that with art, life becomes more colorful and not flat.
But art is not only about the expression of beauty. It must also “liberate”, in a sense that art should be the mediation of enlightment for people from ignorance and oppression. At least, that is what the Tritu ra group believed in as a background for their establishment.
“’Reading’ the world of finearts in the booming era where market monopoly is strongly influential. We can see that at that time, there are almost no educational works. We also watch as the artworks with social realism style begin to fade out,” claimed Sumarwan, one of the members of Tritura group.
It was based on that disappointment on the finearts phenomenon in the booming era that the Tritura was founded. Then, Tritura was deeply aware that the face of market fundamentalism was not only dealt with by society in the economy battlefield. The art and culture space was also a victim of the comodification process.
Back then it is as if art was lured, herd, and hijacked as products to sail to market. Therefore the sense of art as the fruits of history upon how the world and spirituality were invented in various forms seemed to have lost it meaning.
Based on that reality, on August 4 2008, in the Jogja National Museum’s gallery for citizen area, friends from Tritura whom back then were pioneered by Irwan; Sumarwan; and Iskandar, held their first exhibition. The theme of the exhibition was selftitled “Tritura”. This moment was also the monumental time of the founding of Tritura.
“Basically we just wish to maintain the fire that is diminishing with time. We actually realize that, not even to fight the market current, to keep up is also very hard. But at least we are here to do it,” pride Sumarwan.
The word Tritura, according to Sumarwan, is an acronym of “Tiga Tuntutan Rasa” (the Three Feels Demand). The first is the feel to reach the aesthetics, the second is the feel to reach techniques, and the third is the feel to reach ideology. In an overall meaning, art should comprise of aesthetics value, supported by the technical strength of the artist. However it should not be free from ideology substance.
Lately the members of this group not only consist of Irwan, Sumarwan and Iskandar only. Several names like Sahanuddin Hamzah, Sriyadi, Duvart Anggelo, and Satria Nur had also come aboard. The one vision they will continue to fight for, is “the art that provides liberation potential and the victory of the people”. n
